Must a Pregnant Woman Fast on Tisha B'Av?
Question
My wife is in the eighth month of her pregnancy. Is she required to fast on Tisha B'Av? Thank you.
Answer
Hello,
She is required to fast, as it is established in the Shulchan Aruch (Orach Chaim 559:5) that pregnant and breastfeeding women fast on Tisha B'Av just as they fast and complete their fast on Yom Kippur.
This is, of course, assuming a healthy pregnancy. If not, one should consult with a doctor and a halachic authority.
Best wishes,
