Question

Dear Rabbi, is it permissible to read Tehillim after sunset, meaning at night? Thank you very much.

Answer

Hello,\n\n1. According to the basic halachic ruling, it is permitted to read Tehillim at night (refer to Sha'ar HaTziyon, Siman 238, Sk1). However, based on Kabbalah, it is preferable to avoid it if one can instead study Oral Torah. But if one would otherwise not study Torah at all, even according to Kabbalah, one should not avoid it (Yabia Omer, Part 6, Orach Chaim, Siman 30, Section 2).\n\n2. Based on Kabbalah, there is no prohibition against reading Tehillim after midnight (ibid, Section 6), and on the night of Shabbat and Yom Tov, one can read Tehillim all night (ibid, Sections 3-5).\n\n3. The matter of avoiding reading Scripture at night applies from nightfall, but there is no concern during twilight (Shu"t Mei Yehuda, Orach Chaim, Siman 22, cited in Yabia Omer, ibid, Section 6).\n\n4. Many Ashkenazi poskim believe that even according to Kabbalah, it is possible to read Tehillim as a plea and request even before midnight (as found in Piskei Teshuvot, Siman 238, Section 3. This is also written in the book Alenu L’Shabeach, Part 2, pages 431-432, and see in Chazon Ovadia, Mourning, Part 1, page 19, which permits reading Tehillim for a sick person even before midnight. Additionally, see Orchot Maran, Part 2, page 854, which witnesses that when the house of Rav Ovadia Yosef zt”l had a sick person, and some members wanted to read Tehillim for his recovery, he allowed them, even before midnight).\n\nBlessings,\n\nHillel Meiris\n\nFor easy reading of Psalms, visit Hidabroot\n\nRabbi Zamir Cohen's fascinating series on Psalms.
