Until when can one pray Shacharit?
Question
Until what time can one pray the Shacharit prayer? And what happens if the time passes? Thank you very much.
Answer
Hello, 1. Ideally, one should pray Shacharit until the end of four hours from the beginning of the day. If one did not manage to pray Shacharit by the end of four hours, they may still pray until midday. However, this is considered a prayer not in its proper time (See Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim, Siman 89, Se'if 1. Check these times in your local calendar as they change daily and by location). One who prays Shacharit after four hours from the beginning of the day should not recite the Brachot (blessings) of Kriyat Shema, that is, the blessings of Yotzer Or, Ahavah Rabbah, and Ga'al Yisrael (Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim, Siman 58, Se'if 6 and Mishnah Berurah Se'if Katan 26. See also Bi'ur Halacha there). 2. If one did not manage to pray Shacharit by midday, if it was due to error or circumstances beyond their control, they should pray the Shemoneh Esrei of Mincha twice - the first for Mincha, and the second as a make-up for Shacharit (Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim, Siman 108, Se'if 1). However, if one intentionally did not pray Shacharit, they cannot make it up (Siman 108, Se'if 7). Best regards, Hillel Meyers
