The Text of the Hamapil Blessing
Question
Should one only recite the Shema prayer and nothing else? I heard there is also something called "Hamapil". I would appreciate an answer, thank you.
Answer
Hello and blessings. Here is the blessing of Hamapil, which should indeed be said before going to sleep. Once you have said this blessing, you should not talk, eat, or drink, but rather sleep immediately. Here is the text of the blessing: Blessed are You, Hashem, our God, King of the Universe, who brings the bonds of sleep upon my eyes and slumber upon my eyelids. May it be Your will, Hashem, my God and the God of my ancestors, that You lay me down to sleep in peace and raise me up in good life and peace. May my share be in Your Torah and may You accustom me to perform mitzvot. Do not lead me into sin, transgression, or iniquity, nor into temptation or disgrace. May the good inclination have dominion over me and let not the evil inclination have dominion over me. Deliver me from evil occurrences and diseases, and may my thoughts, bad dreams, and bad ideas not disturb me. May my bed be flawless before You and enlighten my eyes lest I sleep the sleep of death. Blessed are You, Hashem, who illuminates the entire world with His glory.
