Head lice are tiny, wingless parasitic insects that reproduce quickly by laying eggs on human hair. They grasp hair strands with their claws and feed on human blood several times a day.

From the time an egg hatches, it takes about seven to nine days for a louse to mature enough to lay new eggs. Lice spread primarily through head-to-head contact, but they can also move via shared hairbrushes, combs, hats, or other hair accessories. Headlice move by crawling; they cannot fly or jump.

How to Prevent Head Lice

The safest and most effective ways to prevent head lice include:

Regular combing: Use a fine toothed lice comb on wet hair, suited to hair type and length, to remove lice and eggs before they multiply.

Hairdryers: Carefully applied heat can kill lice and prevent eggs from hatching. Make sure the heat reaches all areas of the scalp, and repeat the process to ensure effectiveness.

Essential oils:

  • Tea tree oil: Mix 3-4 drops with two tablespoons of olive oil (or more depending on hair length). Apply it to the scalp, leave on for 30 minutes, then comb and shampoo. It's a good idea to wrap a scarf around your forehead to protect your eyes.
  • Rosemary oil: Apply a drop behind each ear or add two drops to your shampoo as a preventive measure, taking care to avoid contact with the eyes.

How to Treat Head Lice

Apple cider vinegar: Diluted vinegar helps loosen the glue that attaches eggs to hair. Apply to the hair, leave it on for at least an hour, then comb out the lice and eggs.

Coconut oil: Apply to the hair, leave it on for 30 minutes, then comb out and shampoo. It not only helps remove lice but also strengthens and nourishes the hair.

Repeat treatment: Lice eggs can survive initial treatments, so follow up as necessary to ensure complete removal.

Additional Tips

  • Wash bedding, hats, and head coverings regularly to prevent reinfestation.

  • Check the hair of all household members and treat anyone with lice simultaneously.

  • Patience and consistency are key. Multiple treatments and regular combing are often necessary to fully eliminate lice.

By combining careful prevention, natural remedies, and consistent follow up, head lice can be managed safely and effectively.
