Elephants are among the most fascinating and remarkable animals in the world.

The African elephant is the largest land animal on Earth. An average African elephant weighs between 4 and 7 tons, but a fully grown male can reach up to 12 tons. Their height is equally impressive of up to 3.5 meters (11.5 feet).

Unlike many animals, elephants never stop growing. The older they get, the larger they become. This is especially true of African elephants, which can reach truly enormous sizes in old age.

A Memory Like an Elephant

If you've been told that you have the memory of an elephant, that phrase exists for a reason. Elephants are famous for their astonishing memory.

Researchers once observed a herd of elephants crossing the Namib Desert, decades after they had last passed through the area. Suddenly, the matriarch stopped and began digging at a seemingly random spot in the ground. After digging only a few feet, she uncovered water. Renowned elephant researcher Lawrence Anthony, known as “The Elephant Whisperer,” formed close bonds with herds he rescued from human cruelty. After his death, a herd of elephants he had saved surrounded his home, standing in silence for hours — a rare and powerful display of mourning.
