Detox: How to Start Cleansing Your Body

Toxins that enter our bodies are any substances that interfere with normal bodily functions. When these substances linger in the body for too long, they can cause harm.

Metabolism in the body is a natural process. The body produces toxins and waste materials that it knows how to eliminate. Our body's waste removal systems work well with substances that it recognizes and can break down. This is a natural process that occurs only with food that comes directly from nature.

Things change when toxins enter the body that are difficult for it to break down. These are substances the body does not recognize, like preservatives, refined and hydrogenated oils, artificial coloring, pesticides, and other unidentifiable substances, which don't just come from food. Toxins found in cosmetics, food packaging, the air we breathe, and the water we drink, also make their way into the body.

The body can prevent disease when it successfully breaks down and removes accumulated waste materials from cells via the digestive system, the liver, the skin, urine, and the lymphatic system. It has mechanisms for neutralizing and eliminating toxins.

Problems arise when the rate of detoxification and cleansing fails to keep pace with the influx of new toxins. If the body cannot cleanse itself, it stores these toxins in fatty tissues. Over time, this can lead to headaches, fatigue, rashes, arthritis, difficulty concentrating, and other chronic illnesses, G-d forbid.

To begin a detox, preparation is essential – without it, we can cause harm.

If toxins are released from tissues into the bloodstream too quickly, the liver cannot handle the overload. Therefore, it's important to prepare for detoxification gradually. Without proper preparation, we might do more harm than good.

First, reduce the intake of processed foods. The focus is on minimizing the entry of new toxins such as alcohol, sugar, caffeine, and animal-based foods. Ensure the foods we consume contain fewer toxins and add more vegetables and fruits.

The detox is based on plant foods – leafy greens, sprouts, and a wide variety of vegetables.

It's good to occasionally do a detox, but the daily detox is far more significant, so make it a habit to avoid food three hours before bedtime, ideally as soon as it gets dark. Eating late at night forces the body to digest rather than eliminate toxins.
