They are small and incredibly annoying, one of those pesky issues that can disrupt our day. We're talking about mouth sores on the inside of the cheeks or gums—commonly known as canker sores.

It's important to understand that they indicate a process happening in the body that needs addressing.

The causes of canker sores are numerous, and we might not always know the exact reason. They aren't contagious, but they can stem from:

· Poor diet leading to nutritional deficiencies, especially in those who don't eat a variety of foods, like fruits, vegetables, and enough protein.

· A digestive system that isn't functioning properly, resulting in poor absorption of crucial nutrients. Waste not being disposed of can lead to sores.

· Sensitivity to dairy or gluten, even if not officially diagnosed as allergies. Particularly if the sores recur frequently, it might be worth avoiding foods containing gluten or dairy to see if that's the culprit.

· Oral hygiene: It's important to keep the mouth clean and treat gum diseases. Smoking and alcohol consumption also harm oral health and increase the risk of recurring sores that are hard to get rid of.

· Lack of sleep weakens the immune system, increasing the likelihood of sores in the mouth.

· Unintentional self-bites.

· Stress and tension naturally weaken many systems, and for some, this manifests as mouth sores, especially those with a weak digestive system.

· Some are sensitive to toothpaste with SLS, a foaming agent found in non-natural toothpastes. This can cause sensitivity in the mouth lining and lead to sores.

While not severe, they are irritating, and make eating and drinking uncomfortable. How can you speed up healing?

· Rinse your mouth with sage tea.

· Apply pure honey, like carob honey or unheated honey, directly on the sores.

· Soothe with sesame oil – the oil that floats on tahini.

· Mix a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with a glass of water and rinse over the sores.

· Open a probiotic capsule and apply the powder onto the sores.

· Propolis – use a propolis ointment or dilute drops in a glass of water. You can gargle or swallow to boost the immune system.

· Chew fresh basil or cilantro leaves – effective for speeding up recovery.

· Rinse your mouth with warm water.
