Caught on Camera: Thrilling Volcano Eruption
In the last twenty years, Mount Tavurvur in Papua New Guinea has erupted three times. Tourists on a boat captured one of these spectacular eruptions.
Phil McNamara, a taxi driver from Townsville, Australia, was on a tour boat with fellow travelers in East New Britain when his camera became an unexpected witness to a live volcanic eruption. As they passed by, the group was stunned to see the volcano in action and then heard the sonic boom. They realized they were seeing a rare spectacle. Fortunately for local residents, no one was harmed, although some nearby villages were evacuated as a precaution.
