What Does Judaism Say About Gambling in Casinos?
Question
Hello Rabbi,
I live in Las Vegas,
and I have a question regarding the gambling here.
What does Judaism say about gambling in casinos?
Thank you
Answer
Hello,
For a Sephardi, it is prohibited to play in a casino even if he has other means of livelihood and does not play except randomly; however, it is permitted to play randomly with non-Jews. For an Ashkenazi, it is permitted to play even with Jews if he has other means of livelihood.
All that has been said is from the perspective of the primary law; however, it is not recommended at all due to the destructive results that it entails, and many have fallen from it, and who can mend the aftermath? He who guards his soul should distance himself from this.
Sources: As clarified in Shulchan Aruch, Choshen Mishpat (Siman 336, Sections 1-3) and in the Rema there.
Blessings,
Hillel Meirs
