Regarding Eating Meat on the Tenth of Av
- ח' אב התש"פ
a question
Hello Rabbi, it is said that mourning customs continue into the 10th of Av. What are the implications of this regarding eating meat? Is eating meat permitted on the 10th of Av, and if so, only from a certain time? Thank you, Dori
Answer
Hello, according to Ashkenazi custom, one should refrain from eating meat only until midday of the tenth of Av, no longer (Rema). In this year, when Tisha B'Av falls on a Thursday, some permit eating meat immediately after the end of Tisha B'Av. However, the consensus among later authorities is to refrain from eating meat like a regular year — for Ashkenazim, until midday of Erev Shabbat. For Sefardim, it is recommended to avoid eating meat even after midday until Friday night, except for tasting the Shabbat dishes.
