Is it Permissible to Sew Clothes During the Nine Days?
Question
Since this year Tisha B'Av falls on the upcoming Sunday, the laws of mourning do not apply this week.
The question is whether it is permissible to sew, repair clothing, or even create new items from clothing during this week.
Thank you for your assistance.
Answer
Greetings,
It is advisable to refrain from sewing clothes from the beginning of the month of Av, and this is not dependent on the week in which Tisha B'Av falls. This prohibition applies even if one intends to use the clothes only after Tisha B'Av (see Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 551:7 and Mishnah Berurah 551:49).
However, it is permitted to repair clothes that have torn, as well as to sew on a button or patch on the garment (Nehama Yisrael, chapter 22, section 3).
Sincerely,
Hillel Mayers.
