God Counts a Woman's Tears

AA

Question

Hello, is there a saying that when a woman is sad and crying, God counts her sorrow? Something about how a man must not harm his wife or something similar. I would appreciate the full text of this passage as well as its source.

Regards, Shlomit

Answer

Hello and greetings,

This concept can be found in many places in the Talmud and Midrash, and here is one of them: Yalkut Shimoni, Bereishit, chapter 12, hint 368, states that a person should always be careful not to wrong his wife, for her tears carry much weight in the matter of her wronging.

A person should always be careful regarding the honor of his wife, for blessing does not reside in a person's home except for the sake of his wife, as it is said, "And Hashem benefitted Abraham for her sake." Rava said to the people of Machozah, "Honor your wives so that you may become wealthy."

Sincerely, Benjamin Shmueli
