Is It Necessary to Recite a Blessing Again on Mezuzahs Sent for Inspection?

Question

Hello,

Today we took four mezuzahs for inspection. The rabbi recommended exchanging the mezuzahs from the parents' room with the one from the balcony, which was found to be more exquisite. Should a blessing be recited for this exchange?

In general, all the mezuzahs returned the same day they were taken for inspection. Should a blessing be recited on them? I would like to know the opinion of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef zt"l on this matter.

Answer

Dear Sir or Madam,

According to the opinion of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef zt"l, mezuzahs that were sent for inspection, even though they were found to be kosher, require a blessing to be recited when they are hung up again. However, one should only bless one mezuzah and intend to exempt the others with this blessing. It is important to be careful not to interrupt between them with idle conversation or other matters.

Sources: This is written in his book, Responsa Yechave Da'at, Part 3 (Section 80). However, in the book "Leket She'elot HaMitzuyot," Part 5 (page 29), it is stated in the name of Rabbi Yeshayahu Elyashiv and Rabbi Shlomo Wozner zt"l, that if one took down the mezuzahs for inspection and returns them on the same day, there is no need to recite a blessing again; but if they were left overnight and returned only the next day, a blessing should be recited. Similarly ruled in Responsa Nachalat Pinchas, Part 1 (Section 1, Note 9). Rabbi Nissim Karelitz shlit"a (Leket She'elot HaMitzuyot there) holds that even if one returns to set the mezuzah after several hours, a blessing should be recited, due to the distraction involved.

Regarding the note that a blessing should only be recited on one mezuzah, see https://www.hidabroot.org/question/32456.

Hillel Meirass
