Mezuzah for Balcony Exit
Question
Is there a need for mezuzot on the exit to a balcony? The exit to the balcony has a frame with glass and aluminum doors.
Answer
Hello and blessings,
Yalkut Yosef, Kitzur Shulchan Aruch, Yoreh De'ah, Siman 284 - Laws of Mezuzah
15. Balconies and terraces that are not covered and have no entrance except through the apartment, if they do not have four handbreadths in length and four handbreadths in width, do not require a mezuzah according to the law. This is especially true if the balcony is not covered by a ceiling. Even if the balcony is very long, so that the combination of length and width would make it sufficient to measure four handbreadths by four handbreadths, it does not require a mezuzah. Nevertheless, one who is stringent and establishes a mezuzah without a blessing will be blessed. The mezuzah should be placed on the right side of the entrance from the apartment to the balcony, and not the reverse. However, a balcony on the ground floor, where one enters from the street to the house through the balcony, should have it affixed on the right side of the entrance from the balcony into the house.
Wishing success,
Binyamin Shmueli
