Beta-carotene is an important organic component from the Vitamin A family, found in various plants, and is especially high in carrots.

There's no doubt that eating carrots greatly aids those in need of beta-carotene, but the question is whether eating baby carrots is as good and healthy for the body as consuming regular carrots. This question was asked by many researchers who tried to ascertain the quality of baby carrots, and despite being a "healthy snack" that is particularly attractive and tasty, consuming them does carry significant risks.

Why? We'll get to that soon.

In the meantime, let us tell you that baby carrots were invented by farmers from California - known as the carrot capital - responsible for 70% of the carrot fields in America. The brilliant idea to invent a "new" carrot came at a time when an astronomical amount of "ugly" carrots were discarded, incurring significant financial losses since the carrots were given as animal feed or sold at very low prices.

Baby carrots provided a creative solution for oddly-shaped and unattractive carrots. Farmers put them through machines that polished and cut them into small, perfectly styled pieces, transforming those "ugly" carrots into beautiful, even perfect ones - albeit tiny... From here, the road was short to preserving these carrots in various ways to sell them for long-lasting use.

Amusingly, the cutting and polishing also changed their purpose. In the United States, baby carrots are sold as a snack, and today, they are considered one of the most common snacks for school-aged children. Yes - not sweets or salty snacks, just carrots! But tiny ones.

After the initial wave of success with baby carrots, those farmers decided to abandon traditional carrot farming and focus on producing large quantities of this popular snack, developing different varieties. Farmers use giant machines shaving regular carrots from different angles to make them look smaller. However, as part of this "development," baby carrots are required to be dipped in a chlorine bath and other chemicals to purify them of bacteria, which sometimes adhere to those giant machines. This, of course, is besides the preservatives added when buying baby carrots in cans.

So what should be done? It's simple. Instead of being tempted by baby carrots - a cheap and unhealthy imitation of the real carrot, simply stick with the regular carrot, which tastes at least as good (if not better) than the tiny version. Even if you are excited about carrot snacks for kids, you can make them healthier - simply cut a regular fresh carrot into small, easy-to-eat sticks.
