When winter arrives in Europe or America, rivers freeze, but crocodiles don't die. How do they manage to survive under the ice? They actually put their bodies in a state of pseudo-hibernation to conserve their energy.
Pseudo-hibernation is a state also known in professional jargon as the "lock-in syndrome." The word 'pseudo' means 'like,' so it's a state similar to hibernation, but the crocodile remains fully 'aware' of its surroundings. This remarkable ability is designed to conserve energy and help them survive the cold until the ice melts.
