The Originators of Hebrew Philosophy’s Vocabulary

We’ve all read translated books, but how often do we stop to think about the quality of the translation, the quantity of material preserved, and the central theme of the story? These very terms—"eichut" (quality), "kamut" (quantity), and "mercaz" (central theme)—are examples of Hebrew terms coined by a legendary family of translators: the Ibn Tibbon family.

This historic family translated the greatest works of Jewish thought from Judeo-Arabic into Hebrew and, in doing so, enriched the Hebrew language with foundational vocabulary still in use today. Without their work, it's possible we would lack Hebrew words for basic conceptual terms and perhaps even lose access to some of the most important Jewish texts ever written.

Rabbi Yehuda Ibn Tibbon: The Father of Translators

The founder of the family, Rabbi Yehuda ben Shaul Ibn Tibbon, was born in 1120 in Granada, Spain. A scholar and physician, he fled to Lunel in Provence in 1150 after the Almohad dynasty took over Spain, enforcing forced conversions upon Jews and Christians. In Provence, he studied under Rabbi Meshullam of Lunel while also serving as a respected doctor to generals, knights, and nobles.

Though known as a physician and a friend of Rabbeinu Zerachiah HaLevi (the “Ba’al HaMa’or”), Rabbi Yehuda earned eternal fame for his translations. He kept a renowned personal library and spent 25 years translating classic Jewish works from Arabic to Hebrew so that European Jews and generations to come could access them.

He translated Chovot HaLevavot by Rabbeinu Bachya, Mivchar HaPeninim by Ibn Gabirol, The Kuzari by Rabbi Yehuda HaLevi, Sefer HaShorashim by Rabbeinu Yonah, and Emunot VeDe’ot by Rav Saadia Gaon. Without his precise and poetic work, many of these foundational texts might have been lost to history.

A Multigenerational Mission of Torah and Wisdom

Rabbi Yehuda’s son, Rabbi Shmuel Ibn Tibbon, followed closely in his father’s footsteps. He maintained correspondence with the Rambam (Maimonides), who personally authorized him to translate Moreh Nevuchim (The Guide for the Perplexed) into Hebrew. This work, complex and philosophical, demanded an extraordinary depth of understanding, and Rabbi Shmuel delivered. He also translated the Rambam’s commentary on the Mishnah for all sixty tractates, among other works, and wrote his own commentaries, including one on Kohelet.

Some sources suggest that in his final years, Rabbi Shmuel made aliyah and was buried near Tiberias. He was widely recognized as the Moreh Nevuchim's definitive commentator and analyst. The Radak wrote, “Since our great brother Rabbi Shmuel Ibn Tibbon passed away, I have no one with whom I can discuss this book.” Even the Rambam’s son, Rabbi Avraham, attested that his father believed Rabbi Shmuel had grasped the deepest intentions behind Moreh Nevuchim and his other writings.

Rabbi Shmuel’s son, Rabbi Moshe Ibn Tibbon, carried the torch into the next generation. A scholar, physician, and translator, he translated the Rambam’s Sefer HaMitzvot and Millot HaHiggayon (Logical Terminology) and also authored works of philosophy and science. He died peacefully in Marseille.

Preserving the Rambam and the Intellectual Life of a Nation

Thanks to the Ibn Tibbon family, the writings of the Rambam spread across the Jewish world during his lifetime. They made his brilliance accessible, ensured the survival of philosophical and halachic (Jewish legal) texts, and gave Hebrew the tools to express the depths of Jewish thought. Through their faithful translations, the Ibn Tibbons preserved the soul of the Jewish intellectual tradition and handed it to future generations, word by word.
