Daily Halacha - New Fruit or Fruit of the Seven Species, Which Comes First?

Learn how to prioritize blessings when eating new fruits or fruits from the Seven Species, based on the rulings of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef

How should one say the Shehecheyanu blessing when presented with several new fruits?

When someone has more than one new fruit in front of them, they only need to say the Shehecheyanu blessing once on any one of the fruits and that blessing covers all the new fruits they plan to eat during that time.

However, if a person says the Shehecheyanu on one new fruit, and only afterward is presented with a different new fruit, then they must recite Shehecheyanu again for the new one. This is because the blessing wasn’t said with the second fruit in mind.
This halacha is brought in Yalkut Yosef.

If wine and dates are placed before someone, which one should be blessed first?

In a case where someone is served both wine and dates, even though both are considered important in halacha, each one has a different blessing. Wine has borei pri hagafen, and dates have borei pri ha’etz.

Because the blessings are not the same, the person may choose whichever one they prefer to bless and eat first. Preference is allowed in this case.
This is explained in Chazon Ovadia.

What if there’s a new fruit and also a fruit from the Seven Species, what comes first?

This is a very common and interesting question, especially on Tu B’Shevat or when eating seasonal fruits. If someone has a new fruit (that will require the Shehecheyanu blessing), and also a fruit from the Seven Species like dates, grapes, or pomegranates, the halacha says that the new fruit comes first.

In this case, the joy and uniqueness of the new fruit takes precedence over the special status of the Seven Species.
This ruling is found in Chazon Ovadia.
