The Character of Bilaam: Great Gifts, Rotten Roots

Pirkei Avot (5:19) teaches: “An evil eye, an arrogant spirit, and a limitless appetite are traits of Bilaam the wicked.” These destructive qualities have been interpreted in various ways:

  • An evil eye refers to envy, stinginess, or chronic dissatisfaction with what one has. It leads a person to begrudge others and avoid generosity.

  • An arrogant spirit is pride, namely the refusal to recognize one’s limits or the greatness of others.

  • A limitless appetite can mean excessive desire for forbidden pleasures or a crude disregard for others’ dignity and boundaries.

Bilaam is a paradox. He was a prophet who, according to the Torah, “knew the knowledge of the Most High,” yet he descended into grotesque behavior, even engaging in intimate acts with his own donkey. The sages explain that this contrast is not accidental. Bilaam’s spiritual gifts were undone by his base character. Without a refined character, even the greatest intellect or prophet can live a life of ruin.

He Wanted to Die Like the Righteous, But Not Live Like One

Bilaam longed for a righteous end: “Let me die the death of the upright, and let my end be like his” (Bamidbar 23:10). What he didn’t want was the righteous life—a life of effort, spiritual struggle, and moral restraint.

Instead, Bilaam pursued a life of indulgence, impurity, and sin, hoping that in the end he could simply repent and receive the reward of the righteous. His wish was not granted. The Torah records his grim fate: “And Bilaam son of Beor they slew with the sword” (Bamidbar 31:8). There was no peaceful end, no Divine embrace. Just judgment.

The Power of a Moment

The Talmud (Berachot 7a) describes a moment—1/53,848th of an hour—when Hashem is angry each day. If someone utters a curse at precisely that instant, it will be fulfilled. No human being could identify that moment, aside from Bilaam.

The verse describes him as one who “knows the knowledge of the Most High,” which the sages interpret to mean that he could pinpoint this brief window of Divine anger and unleash curses with devastating precision. That knowledge made him feared, but not righteous.

From Curse to Counsel: Bilaam’s Strategy of Seduction

The Baal Shem Tov explains that Hashem governs the world through both chesed (kindness) and din (judgment). A world ruled by pure anger would collapse; one ruled only by kindness would lack boundaries. In His compassion, Hashem suspended all Divine anger during the days Bilaam attempted to curse Israel so his power would be neutralized.

But Bilaam was cunning. Realizing his curses were blocked, he advised Balak to exploit this moment of unchecked kindness and seduce the Israelites into sin with the daughters of Moav. By triggering their moral failure, Bilaam hoped to drive away the Divine Presence and bring about Israel’s downfall. He didn't resort to sorcery; it was spiritual sabotage.

Bilaam, a non-Jew, was granted prophecy so that the nations could not claim they would have chosen righteousness had they only had a prophet. As the Midrash teaches: “No prophet arose in Israel like Moshe, but among the nations, there was Bilaam” (Sifrei Devarim 357).

After his tenth failed attempt to curse Israel, Bilaam lost his prophetic power entirely and turned to sorcery (Sanhedrin 106a). His spiritual gift was revoked, his moral bankruptcy exposed.

Bilaam’s story is not merely about a man who failed. It is a reminder of what it means to possess power without virtue, talent without humility, and spiritual awareness without moral responsibility.

His downfall is a warning to every generation: greatness without character is not greatness at all.
