#VALUE!

Though Amram is not a household name, his influence echoes through some of the most defining moments in Jewish history. As the father of Moshe Rabbeinu, Aharon the Kohen (high priest), and Miriam the prophetess, he was a spiritual giant whose actions and character shaped the future of the Jewish people during their darkest exile.

A Leader Before the Torah Was Given

Amram was the grandson of Levi and great-grandson of Yaakov. He married Yocheved, the daughter of Levi, making her both his wife and his aunt. This union, while later prohibited by Torah law, was permitted at the time, as they married before the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai.

During the era of Egyptian enslavement, Amram emerged as the people's spiritual and communal leader. He was a man of great stature, both morally and spiritually, who guided his people through oppression with wisdom and faith.

The Zohar explains the significance of his name, “Amram,” as a combination of two Hebrew words: am (nation) and ram (elevated). This alludes to the lofty spiritual heights his children would reach as leaders of the nation (Zohar, Shemot 19:1).

A Chain of Righteousness Across Generations

According to Midrashic tradition, there is a chain of seven tzaddikim (righteous individuals) who rectified major sins from earlier generations and brought the world closer to the revelation of the Shechinah (Divine Presence). Amram is the sixth in this chain, which began with Avraham and culminated with his son Moshe, who was the seventh and final link (Shir HaShirim Rabbah 5:1).

Rabbinic literature praises Amram on several occasions:

  • “Two are better than one” refers to Amram and Yocheved (Bamidbar Rabbah 3:6).

  • “The words of the wise are heard in calm” refers to Amram and his court (Bamidbar Rabbah 83:6).

  • “One man in a thousand I found” refers to Amram (Kohelet 7:28).

  • "New and old I have treasured for you, my beloved" is explained by Rashi as a reference to Amram, who died only because of the sin of Adam, not for any personal wrongdoing (Shabbat 55a).

According to tradition, only four people in history died solely because Adam’s sin brought death into the world, and Amram was one of them.

A Father’s Choice That Changed History

When Pharaoh decreed that every newborn Jewish boy be thrown into the Nile, Amram made a heartbreaking but seemingly logical decision: he divorced his wife to prevent bringing more children into a doomed future. The rest of the men in the nation followed his example.

But his young daughter, Miriam, rebuked him. She argued that his decree was worse than Pharaoh’s: while Pharaoh only targeted boys, Amram’s action prevented both boys and girls from being born. Worse, it denied souls the opportunity to descend into the world and fulfill their purpose.

The Talmud records her bold words: "Father, your decree is harsher than Pharaoh's. Pharaoh only decreed against the males—you, against males and females. Pharaoh's decree concerns this world—you, this world and the World to Come. Pharaoh is wicked; maybe his decree will be fulfilled, maybe not. But you are righteous—your decree will certainly be fulfilled!" (Sotah 12a)

Amram recognized the truth in her words and remarried Yocheved. Inspired by his example, the rest of the men remarried their wives as well. From that second union, Moshe Rabbeinu—the greatest prophet in Jewish history—was born.

Amram's greatness lay not just in being the father of spiritual giants and leaders, but in being a giant himself: a leader who acted with humility, who listened to truth even from a child, and who made choices that changed the course of Jewish history.
