Daily Halacha: Using Wire and Zip Ties on Shabbat

Understanding Shabbat laws for items like zip ties and bread bag twisties, based on the teachings of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef

AA

Many people wonder about common, everyday items and how they fit into the laws of Shabbat. One question that comes up is about using zip ties or wire ties like those you find on bread bags or packaging. Are these considered "tying," which is one of the forbidden activities on Shabbat?

According to the rulings of Maran (our master), Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, it is allowed to use zip ties on Shabbat. There is no concern of violating the melacha (forbidden work) of tying when it comes to using them. This is explained clearly in Chazon Ovadia, page 75.

What about twisting a wire tie around the top of a bag of cookies or bread?

Rabbi Ovadia Yosef also rules that it is allowed to open and re-wrap a wire tie, the kind that’s usually found on bread bags or bottles even on Shabbat. There is no halachic issue of tying in this case, and it is completely allowed. You can find this in Chazon Ovadia, page 77.

These rulings are part of the daily halachot (Jewish laws) shared by Ach Tov VaChesed – Daily Halacha, helping us better understand how to keep Shabbat with care and confidence in everyday situations.
