Unlocking Blessings with Rabbi Yonatan Ben Uziel

As we approach the Shabbat marking the yahrzeit of the holy Tanna, Rabbi Yonatan Ben Uziel, here are ten lesser-known facts about this revered scholar.

1. Rabbi Yonatan Ben Uziel was a first-generation Tanna, a prominent student of Hillel the Elder. He authored the Targum Yonatan on the Prophets.

His greatness is noted in the Talmud, Sukkah: "Our Rabbis taught: Hillel the Elder had eighty disciples; thirty of them were fit for the Divine Presence to rest upon them like Moses our Teacher, thirty of them were fit for the sun to stand still for them like Joshua the son of Nun, and twenty were of intermediate stature. The greatest among them was Yonatan Ben Uziel, and the least among them was Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai."

3. The Midrash further expounds on Rabbi Yochanan Ben Zakkai, stating he left no field of Torah and rabbinic discussion unstudied, from the great to the minutiae. This implies even greater the stature of Yonatan Ben Uziel.

4. The Talmud, Sukkah, shares about his immense holiness: "They said about Yonatan Ben Uziel that when he sat and engaged in Torah, any bird that flew over him immediately burned."

5. Rabbi Yonatan Ben Uziel wrote a translation for the Torah and the Prophets. This Targum was composed from the teachings of the last prophets: Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi. His commentary is distinguished by its insights beyond the literal text, providing allusions to other events and periods.

6. In Megillah, it's said that when he wrote his Targum, the land of Israel quaked. A heavenly voice proclaimed, "Who exposed My secrets to mankind?" He stood up and declared, "It is I who revealed Your secrets; it was not for my honor or my father's house, but for Your glory, to prevent disputes in Israel."

7. Further in Megillah, when he sought to translate the Writings, a heavenly voice told him "Enough," due to the hints of the end times contained therein.

8. A Targum on the Torah is attributed to Yonatan Ben Uziel. Rabbi Menachem Recanati attributes this work to him.

9. His burial site in Amuka is among the most visited of the righteous graves in the Galilee, attracting about one and a half million visitors annually.

10. Tradition holds that Rabbi Yonatan Ben Uziel was unmarried, though some say he married but was childless. It is believed that prayers at his grave open the gates of heaven, and circling his grave seven times is a segulah for finding a suitable match and having children.
