Bruriah: The Scholar Who Challenged the Norms

1. Bruriah was the wife of Rabbi Meir and the daughter of Rabbi Chananiah ben Teradyon, one of the Ten Martyrs.
2. She was an exceptional Torah scholar. It's told in the Talmud that she learned 300 laws in just one day from the sages.
3. Bruriah was known for her sharp intellect and wasn't afraid to correct scholars when necessary.
4. Despite her father's execution by the Romans for studying Torah, she continued her own Torah studies.

She participated in halachic discussions with scholars and even disagreed with her father on matters of purity and impurity, receiving praise from Rabbi Yehuda ben Bava for doing so. 7. The Talmud mentions that Bruriah was accustomed to wearing tefillin, with the Ari haKadosh explaining it as being due to the masculine nature of her soul. 8. It is also recounted that Bruriah persuaded her husband to pray for the repentance of the wicked and lawbreakers living nearby, rather than for their demise. 9. Bruriah practiced great modesty. It's told that she once rebuked Rabbi Yossi for being too verbose when asking her a four-word question instead of using just two words. 10. There are two versions regarding Bruriah's death: one suggests she leapt to her death, while another suggests she fled with her husband to Babylonia to escape Roman persecution.
