The Chafetz Chaim
The Chofetz Chaim's Allegory: A Transformative Journey
In his great work, Torat HaBayit, the Chofetz Chaim presents a powerful allegory about a great minister and his son, skillfully illustrating profound spiritual truths.
He begins by depicting a distinguished minister, accustomed to luxury and refinement, contemplating sending his beloved son to a distant land — a place starkly different from their refined home. The son will encounter severe hardships, interact with uncultured and ignorant people, and be forced to wear coarse garments and subsist on plain and unappetizing food. The Chofetz Chaim then asks: “Is it conceivable that the minister would send his son there if not for some lofty and exalted purpose?”
Hidden Treasures in a Faraway Land
The Chofetz Chaim then explains the purpose — it turns out that there is unparalleled potential awaiting the son in this foreign land where, despite all the challenges, precious stones of extraordinary beauty and rarity can be found simply scattered everywhere one looks. The locals have no appreciation of these stones’ worth, but anyone with wisdom is immediately overwhelmed by their beauty and value. The minister’s son has been granted such wisdom and he will now have the opportunity to amass a treasure beyond his wildest dreams.
Using this allegory, the Chofetz Chaim draws a parallel to our real-life mission. He describes the “King of Kings” — Hashem, who sends souls away from His divine presence to dwell in the lower, physical world. In our world, the soul is clothed in the “coarse garments” of flesh and it derives no pleasure from all the physical aspects of this world. All too often we are surrounded by those who have no understanding or appreciation of our spiritual goals, and remaining determined to attain them can be immensely challenging.
Nonetheless, the knowledge that our soul’s journey is purposeful, allowing it to earn celestial treasures through mitzvot and spiritual growth, gives us the strength to endure.

The Purpose of the Challenges of the Physical World
The Chofetz Chaim emphasizes that although the soul in its divine state, close to Hashem in the upper worlds, experienced bliss, this was unearned. By descending to the material world, a soul gains the opportunity to earn spiritual rewards, escaping the discomfort of receiving “charity” in the World to Come. The effort required to observe mitzvot in the face of worldly distractions transforms trials into victories, resulting in unparalleled rewards.
These victories, the Chofetz Chaim stresses, can only be attained with the help of the Torah’s guidance, which gives us the knowledge and moral fortitude to withstand the constant challenges and surmount them.
Seizing Every Moment
Highlighting the fleeting nature of life, the Chofetz Chaim cautions against idleness. He stresses the importance of constant engagement in Torah study and mitzvah performance, since each moment is an opportunity to collect “precious stones” — spiritual accomplishments that will delight the soul eternally. And, once the moment passes, the potential within it is lost; time can never be regained.
Are Mitzvot Dust or Diamonds?
The Chofetz Chaim uses his allegory to emphasize that we should never undervalue mitzvot. The locals, accustomed to seeing precious stones simply lying on the ground, fail to realize their value and are constantly missing out on immense opportunities. This danger is one that we face, too. Every single minute of the day contains the potential to be used to gather spiritual treasures that will be stored for eternity, but if we allow ourselves to fall into complacency, we risk frittering away our lives on nonsense.
Therefore, he stresses the importance of valuing every moment of our lives, moments that will never return. Our souls have come to this world for only a brief stay and will soon return, hopefully adorned in glory and triumph after surmounting incredible challenges.
