Is it permitted to eat the etrog on Hoshana Rabbah?
The etrog is prohibited from being eaten all seven days because it has been set aside for its mitzva, and only on Shemini Atzeret is it permitted to eat it [Chazon Ovadia, p. 445].
Is it permitted to throw away the lulav and its species?
The lulav and its species are mitzvah objects and, according to basic law, it is permitted to discard them; they should be thrown at the sides of a public domain [Chazon Ovadia, p. 449].
However, Rabbi Chida wrote (Kikar Ladan) "We have seen the wise elders who would keep the four species at the entrance of the house, saying that this action helps for protection."
