A study examining the connection between caffeine and the health of hair follicles has found that those who rinse their hair with boiled coffee twice a week, strengthen their hair roots, prevent hair loss, and achieve shinier, more vibrant-looking hair.
“Caffeine stimulates the hair follicles and encourages them to grow more vigorously, thanks to its antioxidant properties,” explain the researchers. “The effects are faster and more noticeable when the caffeine comes into direct contact with the scalp, as it improves blood circulation in the area.”
Dr. Jeff Donovan, a board-certified dermatologist and expert in hair loss with his own hair care clinic, adds that coffee grounds are an excellent natural alternative to many hair masks, which often have the opposite effect and can even lead to hair shedding. “Caffeine also helps remove dead skin cells, keeping the scalp clean and refreshed, and promotes the growth of new cells to replace the old ones. These new cells, of course, will generate new and healthier hair.”
