Mystery: What keeps the residents of a small Italian fishing village healthy and strong, allowing them to live past 100? This is precisely what cardiologist Dr. Aseem Malhotra, an expert in heart problems caused by obesity, set out to discover.
Together with his research colleague, filmmaker Donal O'Neill, the two ventured to the village of Pioppi and returned with remarkable findings: it turns out that the fishermen have maintained the same diet for years, consisting of 10 simple foods scientifically proven to prevent diseases like diabetes and obesity, which have become global plagues in recent decades.
"The 21-Day Diet," is the name of the method the two are now spearheading, which features extra virgin olive oil as one of the recommended foods for maintaining heart health. "In Pioppi, people consume at least a quarter cup of extra virgin olive oil daily to achieve good heart health."
Other foods consumed in the fishing village of Pioppi include nuts and almonds (which are important fiber sources), cauliflower, zucchini, broccoli, eggplant, sweet potatoes, onions, and (of course) fish.
