The summer is here, and the fruits filling the grocery stores are tempting us all. However, diabetics need to be extra cautious when tempted to add sugar-packed fruits to their shopping carts.

As a former diabetic trying to maintain a reasonable blood sugar level, I discovered this week a piece of news that delighted me, and I attribute it to an article by my favorite online doctor - Dr. Axe. "The myth says that, for example, watermelon has the most sugar, but that's not true," he writes. "Mango and grapes are the sweetest, and the sugar they contain is equal to no less than four teaspoons."

According to him, a moderate serving of watermelon contains about seven percent sugar compared to fruits like apples, peaches, grapes, mangoes, and pears, where the sugar ranges from 10-15% per average serving. "I'm not saying that diabetics should completely avoid eating fruits. Yes, even those with high sugar content," he says and surprises: "I'm not recommending eating a lot of them, of course, but if you consume a reasonable serving of any fruit together with protein like yogurt - the sugar won't cause significant harm," he concludes.
