A new study published in the journal Eating Behaviors found that chewing gum while walking aids weight loss by increasing walking speed and heart rate, engaging muscles, and burning the most calories.
A team of researchers from Waseda University in Tokyo examined the impact of chewing gum while walking. Forty-six participants aged 21 to 61 were divided into two groups: the first group was instructed to chew two pieces of gum while walking at a normal pace for fifteen minutes and again after an hour of rest. In contrast, the second group was instructed to do the same with a slight modification—they were asked to swallow a powder containing all the gum's ingredients instead.
The results showed that the heart rate was significantly higher in the group that chewed gum—a factor previously found effective in dieting. Moreover, both the heart rate and the change in heart rate when transitioning from rest to walking were notably higher on average in the gum-chewing group.
"Chewing gum while walking affects several physical and physiological functions in both men and women of all ages. Our study indicates that chewing gum while walking extends the walking distance and increases energy expenditure, especially among middle-aged and older men," said Dr. Yuka Hamada, who led the study.
However, there is a caveat: it must be emphasized that chewing gum alone is not beneficial for weight loss. A balanced diet and regular physical activity are essential.
