Joe Lamont, a 4-year-old from Ireland, was born with autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease, a rare condition that can lead to kidney failure. Unfortunately, Joe's kidneys ceased functioning, requiring him to undergo dialysis three times a week.
While undergoing dialysis, Joe developed a severe liver disease. The only way for Joe to survive is through an urgent liver transplant.
Joe was on the waiting list for a liver donation, but none was in sight. Meanwhile, his mother, Sarah, underwent tests that showed she was the best match to donate a kidney and part of her liver.
Organ transplantation is a complex medical procedure that becomes easier when the donor is a family member. Sarah was overjoyed to learn she could save her son's life. In an interview with the Telegraph, she explained, "My Joe is on dialysis three times a week. It's very difficult."
The liver transplant is scheduled in about 20 days, with the kidney transplant to happen a few months later, once Sarah and Joe recover from the first surgery.
Sarah added that despite Joe's severe medical condition, he is full of life and joy. "His cheerful personality and sense of humor inspire me," she said. "He is so funny, has a repertoire of jokes, and loves to sing. He is looking forward to the surgeries and is happy to receive a new liver and kidney."
