Author David Benjamin (in English: David Benjamin), whose articles are occasionally published in prestigious US journals, is a great advocate of quality of life and health. His book "101 Ways to Lose Weight on a Budget" is one of the best-selling books, partly because he studied Chinese medicine in depth, frequently incorporating tips from this field in his articles.
In one of his recently published articles, he offers advice for those suffering from chronic dryness and painful cracks in their feet — to place onion rings under their socks before bedtime. "The feet contain strong and direct access points to the body's internal organs, known in Chinese medicine as 'meridians,'" he explains. "Meridians are the pathways leading to every organ in your body, and those familiar with Chinese medicine know that the meridian system matches remarkably well with the nervous system."
According to him, the foot has different nerve endings and about 7,000 meridians that are directly connected to various body organs. "These meridians often 'fall asleep' because we wear closed shoes. This is one reason I recommend walking barefoot from time to time. Walking without shoes frees the feet and awakens those dormant meridians."
So how is the onion related to this?
"One of the most effective ways to clear electrical pathways and assist those dormant meridians is by cutting onion or garlic and placing them inside your socks before sleeping. Due to their pungency from the phosphoric acid they contain - onion and garlic have tremendous benefits in killing bacteria and purifying the blood system."
According to Benjamin, it's advisable to use organic onions, as they aren't laden with pesticides and other chemicals. "Purifying your blood happens while you sleep, with the onion absorbing all the toxins and bacteria. This is one of the tips I most recommend in my books," he states.
