A new study conducted at the University of Perugia in Italy determines that eating apples can reduce the risk of various types of cancer.

The study was published in the scientific journal Public Health Nutrition, and its conclusions are dramatic: High consumption of apples significantly reduces the risk of getting cancer.

During the study, researchers analyzed 41 studies conducted worldwide examining the effects of apples on various types of cancer. Researchers defined high apple consumption as eating at least one apple a day (or seven apples a week). Low apple consumption was defined as eating one apple a week or less.

Among the studies reviewed, there were those that clearly examined the quantity of apples consumed by participants. The researchers also controlled for factors that could skew the results, such as age, smoking, alcohol, and more.

From the weighted data, it appears that high apple consumption reduces the risk of lung cancer by 12%, esophageal cancer, colon cancer, pancreatic cancer, and oral cancer by 28%, and breast cancer by 11%, compared to low apple consumption.

The study found no link between eating apples and a decrease in prostate cancer risk, nor did it examine other types of cancer for which previous studies had not been conducted.

These findings align with a new study conducted at Cornell University. This study shows that apple peel has strong antioxidant properties that provide a high barrier against the effects of breast cancer cells.

Cancerous tumors are uncontrolled cell growths that spread independently throughout the body. Cancer development is based on three fundamental stages: the initiation stage, where mutations occur in the cell's DNA. The promotion stage, where the malignancy potential of the tumor appears, aiding its growth, and finally, the formation of metastases that spread throughout the body.

The study suggests that apples are effective in blocking these three stages: the antioxidants block the spread of cells. Moreover, the antioxidants in apples improve and strengthen the immune system's function, which cleans up all tumor buds before they develop into cancerous cells.
