Daily Halacha – Laws of Rosh Hashanah, 25th of Elul 5777

Essential laws for preparing for Shabbat during the second day of Rosh Hashanah

AA

Is it permissible to cook during the afternoon of the second day of Rosh Hashanah when it falls on Friday?

Even though one has properly prepared an Eruv Tavshilin, one should strive to cook Shabbat needs during the early hours of the day, so that baking and cooking are completed while it is still daytime, because if guests happen to arrive on the holiday, one can serve them these dishes for consumption [Yalkut Yosef Siman 527].

Does the Eruv permit only cooking or other preparations from the holiday to Shabbat as well?

Once one has established an Eruv Tavshilin and declared "to perform all our needs from the holiday to Shabbat," it is permissible to prepare beds from the holiday for Shabbat, wash dishes from the holiday for Shabbat, and it is also permissible to roll the Torah scroll from the holiday for Shabbat, and other similar activities [Yalkut Yosef Siman 527].
