What is the essence of the repentance process?

The month of Elul is the appropriate time to examine one's actions, increase Torah study and good deeds, and return in repentance both from our harmful actions and from character traits that are not good. One of the reasons for blowing the shofar during the month of Elul is to arouse the people to repentance.

All that you will find in the writings of the early authorities regarding mortifications and fasts for atonement of sins were only mentioned for those whose occupation is not Torah study. However, for one whose occupation is Torah and who knows the knowledge and fear of Hashem, his remedy is to engage in Torah study without weakening or interrupting his learning [Yabia Omer 1:14].
