During the study, researchers analyzed data from more than 73,000 adults in the UK. They examined the tendency to wake up early in the morning or go to sleep late at night, as well as the sleep durations of the participants. The researchers then compared this data to levels of depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues experienced by the study participants.
The findings showed that participants who went to bed after 1:00 AM were at a 20%-40% higher risk of developing various mental health problems compared to those who went to bed earlier. Participants who reported staying awake past midnight were at increased risk of impulsive and harmful behavior.
Waking up early was also found to be beneficial for mental health. Those who woke up with the sunrise were found to have the best mental health, compared to those who woke up later.
Jamie Zeitzer, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University and one of the study's lead researchers, stated, "We found that staying up late is not good for mental health. The big unknown is why."
Numerous studies indicate that quality and adequate sleep have a critical impact on physical and mental health. The general recommendation is to sleep 7 to 9 hours each night. This range is considered optimal for most adults and helps improve brain function, strengthen the immune system, improve mood, and prevent mental and physical issues. It is important to maintain a consistent sleep routine to maximize health benefits and maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
