Navigating modest listening practices in Jewish tradition

AA

Is it permitted to listen to women singing on discs or radio?

It is forbidden to listen to discs and cassettes of women singing because a woman's voice is considered as nakedness (ervah). This applies specifically when one knows the woman and has seen her in reality even once. However, if one has only seen her in a picture or has not seen her at all, according to the strict letter of the law there is room to permit it when necessary, though one who is stringent will be blessed [Yabia Omer 9, p. 235].

Is it permitted for brothers and sisters to sing together the songs of Shabbat?

One may be lenient to allow brothers and sisters to sing together at the Shabbat table in a manner where the sisters do not sing alone. Even if there is a family birthday celebration and girls of age ten are singing, one can rely on the lenient opinions to sing together [Responsa of the Rishon LeZion 1, p. 34].
