A guide to balancing Torah study with communal obligations

Can a Torah scholar who is dedicated to his studies avoid attending a mitzvah meal?

A Torah scholar who is dedicated to his studies may refrain from attending a Sheva Brachot meal in order to continue studying Torah diligently. Not only is he not required to interrupt his learning if he has already begun, but he is also permitted to choose studying over attending a mitzvah meal from the outset. This is especially true for a Torah scholar who is clarifying a practical halachic ruling, as there is no greater virtue than this. Nevertheless, if he sees that by attending he could benefit others through words of moral instruction, it would be worthwhile for him to attend [Yabia Omer 4, 19].
