#VALUE!

The letter Shin signifies the capability of transformation within creation and is the spiritual root of this ability. Thus, it also represents affiliation and absolute control, for one who controls something completely determines its change in form.

Changing the form of matter in the natural world generally occurs through breaking, crumbling, and dissolving—methods that alter the material's initial form—or via heating with fire, cooking, and burning. Therefore, the tops of the Shin look like teeth that cut and change the form of food, resembling the flames of a rising fire. Because the action of the letter Shin is to alter the state of matter, and more deeply, to change its status and position—primarily upwards. With heating, matter changes from a solid or liquid state to a gas, enabling it to rise quickly upwards, like a rapidly ascending flame.

Indeed, similar to the letter Resh, which hints at rising to leadership and greatness, the letter Shin also implies rising to a higher level. However, the letter Resh vibrates both in pronunciation and in the outcome of its actions as explained earlier, while the letter Shin whistles—both in pronunciation by aligning the upper and lower teeth, and in the results of its action in a person, for better or worse. Its effect in changing a person's state is sharp and swift, like an igniting fire reaching upwards.

The transformative power of the letter Shin can manifest positively as a shift from conflict and wars to real peace and unified perfection, or negatively by breaking perfect truth and creating falsehood. Indeed, falsehood is the chief power of the evil inclination, the primordial snake, which is the Satan and the Angel of Death, as explained in the Talmud and the Zohar.

Because the letter Shin contains the power of control that allows for total transformation, it is the letter of affiliation, such as replacing 'they' with 'their,' and it replaces the word of affiliation "asher." For example: "shalama ehyeh ke'otiyah," instead of 'asher lama ehyeh.'

The letter Shin first appears in the Bible at the start of the word in the verse: "et hashamayim v'et haaretz" because the heavens (shamayim) are named for the elements of fire and water they contain. As the sages said in the Talmud, "Shamayim are fire and water." In the lower heavens, known as the blue sky or atmosphere, water vapor mixes with fire properties. Scientists currently theorize (and research is ongoing) that friction between ice particles in clouds creates a positive and negative electric charge causing lightning (fire!). A typical lightning bolt generates a billion watts or more! It has also been discovered that about 50 kilometers above Earth, there exists an atmospheric electrical layer called the "electrosphere," which plays a role in the balance of atmospheric and terrestrial electricity; it possesses high electrical conductivity and is permanently charged.

Pronunciation and Form

As stated, the letter Shin is pronounced with a whistle, sh', sh', and its whistling is heard powerfully like fire ascending high.

Its form, like teeth that break and crush, and as flames of fire rising upwards.

Shin comes from the word "shayan". The tooth is called this because it changes the form of food in the significant achievement of nourishing and sustaining humans and all living beings. This change enables food to rise and transform from the 'vegetable' level to 'animal' when consumed by animals, and from 'vegetable' and 'animal' to 'speaking' level when it becomes part of a human body, regarded as the elevating power within the letter Shin.

This transformation in food is accomplished through the breaking ability of the tooth, which is the power of the letter Shin—to break food or any material object. On a spiritual level in humans, one is given the opportunity to break bad traits with its power, to change it and elevate oneself until "a wild mule—a person is born."

On a higher level, the humble person (n') who guarded (s') his eyes (a') and mouth (p'), thus achieving the title of a righteous man (tz'), continued to elevate himself until he became holy (k'), earning the position of leader (r') and guide. Now, with the transformative and elevating power of the letter Shin, the holy person's status transformed from a 'man' to 'a man of Hashem'. As written about Moses: "And this is the blessing Moses, a man of Hashem, bestowed."

However, as explained in the previous letters, the letter K' is a letter of encirclement, representing ascent in twisting circles; the letter R' represents a straight ascent upward through vibration, while the letter Shin represents a rapid and sharp ascent through whistling upwards. Achieving the status of holiness (k') involves incremental ascent like circles around a mountain, and once this level is attained, one ascends straight to the peak, to become a leader (r'). Then the ascent becomes sharp and fast as the whistling (sh') of an arrow or missile soaring to become 'a man of Hashem,' ready to arrive at the purpose (t’) of man—to merge as with infinite light, like a child upon its mother, delighting in Hashem and enjoying the radiance of His Presence.

Numerical Value

The numerical value of the letter Shin is three hundred. This number symbolizes the connection of three sides creating completeness, as in "a threefold cord is not quickly broken." While in the letter G', each of the three sides is at the unit level, and in the letter L', each side is at the tens level, in the letter Shin, each side is significant at the hundreds level. It is a powerful and rare connection achieved by someone who strives to acquire the three sides that express completeness. Initially, he ascends the ranks leading to the level of holiness hinted at by the hundred in the letter of holiness—the letter K' (one side); from here, he ascends to leadership and greatness hinted at by the hundred added to the hundred in the letter R'; and now he has also connected the third side of the letter of transformation—the letter Shin, adding another high level and closing the triangle by changing his essence and elevating himself like a flame to the peak of spirituality accessible to man. These three sides are also hinted at by the three vavs (the connection letter) in the letter Shin, resembling three separate sides uniting, creating completeness. And they are as the Holy One Blessed be He (k'), Torah (r'), and Israel (sh').

This completeness, symbolized by the number three hundred, which distinguishes between ordinary people and the perfect person, is one of the reasons for the number three hundred cubits in the ark's length that Noah was commanded to build, which protected him and distinguished him from the sinners; and also the number of three hundred warriors chosen by Gideon by Hashem's command, from among the multitude who knelt down, who brought salvation to Israel; and also the number of three hundred golden shields given by King Solomon in honor of Hashem in the House of the Forest of Lebanon, intended for spiritual protection.
