Essential guidelines for observing the Three Weeks with practical exceptions for music and celebrations
In which cases is it permitted to listen to music during the Three Weeks?
- A music teacher may continue working until the week in which the 9th of Av falls [Chazon Ovadia Taaniyot, p. 157].
- Children in summer camps who need to be engaged with songs - there is room for leniency [ibid].
- For the purpose of a timely mitzvah celebration such as a wedding, bar mitzvah, circumcision, pidyon haben, or completion of a Talmudic tractate - it is permitted.
- Similarly, those who are stringent not to get married during the Three Weeks are permitted to attend their friends' weddings and listen to music, since it is a celebration of a mitzvah.
