We are all from the same source, on a mission to reunite.

Every person operates within a "network of projects". We are unable to complete our purpose by only thinking about our private lives, as our lives are interconnected with the lives of others. If I think only about myself, I will not succeed!

Imagine that you spend months preparing for a soccer game, and when the big moment arrives, you discover that the other players are not properly prepared and you realize that your preparation was in vain. In the same way, your growth toward truth and life purpose requires the participation of those around you.

In the beginning, the world consisted of just one person. Adam then received Eve as a life partner, and everyone who came after them branched out from this couple. We therefore understand that all of humanity shares the same source and purpose.

Although on Earth we are represented as different people, our source is the same. Conflicts, revenge, and ill will that are common among people are therefore illogical, because when we attack another person we are essentially attacking ourselves!

From the moment the first human soul was divided, our goal has been to reunite and connect the two souls. This is achieved by mutual communication and giving, which are both related to the communication of souls.

To be connected does not require a physical connection. For example, by giving charity, we are connecting to the recipient even if we do not know them personally. We may feel that a particular person is thinking of us, even when we are in different countries. A mother is so sensitive to her child's cries that her body produces milk when the baby is hungry, even if the baby is not with her.

Rabbi Dessler divided humanity into two groups: those who are givers, and those who are takers. The former feel they need nothing more for themselves- they are already whole enough to work towards fulfilling their destiny. Everything they have is dedicated to their life's purposes, as they do not consume beyond what is necessary for creating good things. These people are truly happy because they have a deep connection with others and know that they lack nothing.

The second group comprises those who choose to focus their lives on the constant pursuit of their personal interests. They are convinced that the more they have, the happier they will be. Not only do they not contribute to the world, but they become a burden because they only consume- they are trying to fill themselves superficially because deep inside they feel incomplete. What they do not realize, is that the material pursuits are not that which will satisfy them. They must search within themselves for their personal value and skills, and invest them in their mission.

A person must constantly improve the following three connections: with others, with their partner, and with Hashem. More about this in the following chapters.
