#VALUE!
Before I became more observant, I knew that life wasn't just about working, enjoying weekends, and passing time pleasantly. I understood there was some purpose to my existence, only I didn't know what it was. The search for one's personal mission is one of the central themes in a person's life.
According to the Rebbe of Lubavitch, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, every person is created with a special purpose and mission that they must discover and fulfill in their lives. The leader of the Chabad movement imparted extensive and profound teachings on the subject, and following are some insights according to his writings.
Understanding the Importance of a Personal Mission
Everyone is Created with a Special Purpose
The Rebbe of Lubavitch emphasizes in his writings that every person is created with a distinct purpose and mission. He sees every individual as a messenger of Hashem created to fulfill a specific purpose in this world. The Rebbe calls upon each person to seek and find their unique purpose and dedicate their life to its realization.
Ways to Discover the Mission
Connection to Spirituality and Mitzvot
The Rebbe teaches that the way to discover one's mission begins with performing mitzvot and studying Torah. According to him, the mitzvot are the means through which Hashem bestows blessings and abundance upon an individual. Observing mitzvot is a central part of fulfilling a person’s purpose, serving as a key instrument for drawing closer to Hashem and uncovering one's personal mission.
Constant Action and Inner Work
The Rebbe spoke about the importance of continuous action and personal and spiritual development in life. He stressed not to be satisfied with the current state, but to always strive for improvement and to add goodness and holiness to the world. "Do not despair and don't remain in one place; always add, always improve." The aspiration for progress is an essential part of being a Jew and an inseparable part of our mission in the world.
Helping Others and Community Service
Helping others and serving the community is an integral part of finding one's mission. "A person is created to better and assist others; in doing so, they realize their true purpose." The Rebbe sees acts of kindness and helping others as a central way to bring holiness into the world and fulfill one's personal mission.
Inner Reflection
"Dedicate time each day to reflect on your actions and ways; this is how you will find the right path for you." The Rebbe recommends consistent self-reflection to examine ourselves and understand what is the suitable path for us to advance and develop.
Finding the Mission Through Study and Guidance
Learning Torah
Studying Torah is a central tool for discovering one's personal mission. The Rebbe teaches that engaging in Torah study connects us to our spiritual roots and helps us understand our mission in the world. "Torah is light, and by learning Torah, we bring light into the world and discover the correct path."
Choose a Mentor
The Rebbe of Lubavitch emphasizes the importance of spiritual guidance from knowledgeable and experienced individuals. "Don't remain alone in your efforts; receive guidance from someone who knows and understands." Proper guidance can help a person understand their place and mission and direct them to the correct path.
Mission as a Calling
Personal and Public Calling
The Rebbe sees every individual as a messenger destined to perform a certain role in the world. The mission can be personal - within the family, friends, and close community, or public - in activities for the general good and the world. According to him, as messengers of Hashem, we must strive to influence and do good for everyone around us.
Facing Challenges
The path to discovering one's mission is not always easy and can often be full of challenges. The Rebbe teaches that one should not despair from difficulties, but see them as part of the process. "The difficulties are tests and opportunities for growth; each time you overcome one, it's another step toward discovering your purpose".
