- Eating Dates Can Help Relieve Sadness
The Talmud (Tractate Ketubot 10b) states: "One who eats dates in the morning and evening benefits, but in the afternoon they are harmful. At midday there is nothing like them- they eliminate three things: bad thoughts, intestinal illness, and hemorrhoids."
Rashi explains that "eliminating bad thoughts" refers to relieving worry and anxiety, as dates bring joy to the heart.
Melaveh Malka Meal for a Lifted Spirit
The late Rebbetzin Kanievsky zt”l recommended the Melaveh Malka meal (the meal traditionally eaten after Shabbat) for women experiencing low mood. This special meal is known for its ability to uplift the spirit and banish negative emotions.
Black Raisins for Anxiety and Depression
Eating black raisins can help remove depression and worry, according to the book "Avia Segulot" quoting "Refuat HaBosem."
To avoid accidentally consuming insects, make sure to buy raisins that are specially produced under strict kosher supervision—and only eat them after checking carefully.
The "Post-Shabbat Blues" Remedy
Are you familiar with the heavy feeling after Shabbat ends? For a simple cure, drink something warm, eat hot bread, or take a warm shower, and while doing so, say aloud: “Hot food on Motzei Shabbat is a remedy” This phrase appears in the Talmud (Tractate Shabbat 119b), where it is taught that something warm is considered a healing remedy (melugma) for Saturday night. Rashi explains: "Hot" means to drink or wash with warmth, and "melugma" is medicine. (As cited in the book Segulot Yisrael)
A Verbal Segulah from Rabbi Emanuel Mizrachi
After reciting the Morning Blessings (Birkot HaShachar) and the Blessings on the Torah (Birkot HaTorah), say the following phrase three times in a row: "Micha’el the High Priest, minister and guardian of Israel" According to the Book of Segulot, this brings joy to the heart.
Pray for Joy
Prayer is the first and most essential step in receiving heavenly help. Find a quiet moment and speak to G-d from your heart, like a child speaking to a loving parent. You can also use this short prayer that was composed specifically for requesting joy: "Master of the world, fill my heart with joy, light, and peace. Help me see the good in every situation, and bring serenity to my soul. Let my days be filled with meaning, gratitude, and love. Amen."
Faith and Trust in G-d – The Greatest Remedy for Joy
Rabbi Yigal Cohen writes in his book "Yagel Libi B’Yeshuatecha" ("My Heart Will Rejoice in Your Salvation"): "If we believe that G-d loves us, and because of that love, He will give us a better future of peace, serenity, good health, abundant livelihood, and success- then G-d will respond in kind to our thoughts, and all good things will come to us. Therefore, it’s very beneficial for a person to train themselves to think positively and imagine a bright future. If a negative thought enters your mind, replace it immediately with verses of trust in G-d. That will help strengthen your belief in a sweet and hopeful future."
