Is it permissible to stand during the reading of the Ten Commandments?
It is forbidden for the congregation or an individual to stand during the reading of the Ten Commandments, and if an individual is in a synagogue where the congregation customarily stands during the reading of the Ten Commandments, and he is unable to change their custom, he should stand up at the beginning of the Torah portion reading, or at least stand at the beginning of the reading of the person called up to the Torah who was invited to read the portion of the Ten Commandments, so that he will not appear to be sitting among those standing and thereby disrespecting the sanctity of the Ten Commandments [Yalkut Yosef Siman 494, Yachaveh Da'at 6, 8].
If one's father or teacher is called up to the Torah, he should stand immediately when they are called up, so that it will be apparent that his standing is only out of respect for his father or teacher, and in this case, there is no concern. [Yachaveh Da'at 1, 29].
