Practical guidelines for observing Shavuot based on the rulings of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef

AA

If someone is concerned that staying awake all night on Shavuot will prevent them from properly praying the morning service, should they sleep or study?

One who is concerned that staying awake all night to study will prevent them from properly praying the morning service should at least try to participate in learning until midnight, and then go to sleep so that their reward doesn't become a loss.

At midnight, one should recite the bedtime Shema even if they're not going to sleep.
