In a previous article, we discussed preparing for the Amidah (silent prayer)- reflecting on the nature of speech, the posture of standing before G-d, approaching Him with both childlike longing and deep humility, as a creation before its Creator.

To truly receive that spiritual inspiration, we must first enter a state of calm, both emotionally and physically. This inner shift should also manifest in our breathing pattern, which directly affects how we speak and focus.

When a person lacks inner calm and clarity, it shows in their breath. As Rashi explains on the verse: "But they did not listen to Moses because of shortness of breath and hard labor" (Exodus 6:9) he writes: "They could not be comforted because their breath was short. Anyone who is distressed has shortened breath and cannot breathe deeply."

Anxiety and stress are expressed in shortened breath, and in such a state, a person cannot enter a space of joy.

Breath as an Expression of the Mind and Soul

The Zohar explains that the three essential parts of the body- brain, heart, and liver (forming the acronym MeLeCh in Hebrew)- represent the forces of intellect, emotion, and physical desire. The liver constantly pumps warmth toward the heart, symbolizing the natural pull of material urges. In contrast, breath expresses the soul's presence in the body and is a direct sign of life and divine spirit. Through breath, spiritual energy cools the heart and moderates physical impulses, allowing the spirit to influence the heart more than the flesh.

Before the Amidah, it is therefore helpful to slow our breathing to a calm and natural rhythm. This enables deep breathing that strengthens the power of thought, by reaching a genuine state of mental tranquility, as one who stands peacefully before their Father.

Deep, calm breathing increases mental clarity. As you breathe, focus on the air entering deeply into your body- bringing renewed energy- and feel the divine kindness in each and every breath.

Every Breath Is a Gift of Divine Compassion

According to the Arvei Nachal, a great Chassidic teacher, each breath we take expresses G-d's limitless kindness. Every moment we are given renewed life, even after mistakes or sins, is a testament to G-d's unconditional love and patience. We are constantly being recreated, constantly given a fresh start. The past holds no power over the future and each moment is a new act of creation, designed specifically for this very instant.

When a person contemplates this truth, they can deeply connect to the Divine renewal that fills every second of existence.

Breath as a Bridge Between Human and Divine

The air that enters and exits the body is the most direct connection between our physical being and our Creator. The mystical intention behind every breath is that every exhale carries with it the imprints of your thoughts and desires, and rises upward to G-d. Each moment is judged on its own, and each breath forms a thread in the spiritual garment that connects a person to their Maker.

The Maggid of Mezeritch explains that focusing on the breath during prayer- on the warm air that carries the words- helps anchor us in real connection with G-d. That breath, intertwined with our spoken words, reflects the intimate and unbroken bond between a soul and its Source. This awareness brings a person to a profound sense of peace, anchored in divine closeness.

In another teaching, the Maggid adds that when a person's intent is focused on G-d, especially during prayer, their breath becomes directly linked to divine energy, and each inhale brings them renewed vitality. When the words of prayer flow naturally in sync with our body’s natural breath, this indicates that we have entered true calm and mental clarity.

Before beginning prayer, focus on slowing your breath to a calm, steady rhythm. Your breathing expresses your direct connection to the Creator, who renews your breath at every moment. Contemplating your breath helps you release tension and feel your smallness in contrast to G-d’s vast kindness. In that space of humility and peace, you are ready to stand before your Father, fully present and fully alive.
