A person striving for true self-perfection by refining their character and shaping their personality may ask: What is the most effective way to cleanse the soul from past residue? How do we uproot deeply embedded habits and memories formed from negative experiences throughout life?
Our sages compared the human inclination to sin to oil, which leaves behind stubborn stains, and the Torah to water, which cleanses those stains. Imagine a cup filled to the brim with oil. If you begin to slowly drip water into it, the water will settle at the bottom, forcing a drop of oil to spill over. Continue this process, and drop by drop, the oil will be pushed out, until the cup contains only water.
The same takes place in the mind. Even if someone’s thoughts are filled with improper memories and negative traits, each drop of Torah that enters displaces a bit of that negativity. Over time, with consistent learning, the mind is cleansed and becomes pure.
According to the great Jewish thinker, the Ramchal (Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto), Torah study not only brings spiritual influence into the world, but it transforms the soul of the person learning it. In his work Derech Hashem, he writes that among all the divine influences that G-d pours into creation, Torah is the highest. It is the most exalted channel through which the Creator bestows His light and glory upon His creations.
He describes Torah as containing a reflection of G-d's own reality- unparalleled in all existence. This is not simply intellectual wisdom like other sciences or philosophies. Torah is infused with spiritual power, so that when a person studies it, speaks it, thinks about it, and understands it, it draws divine light directly into the soul, refining the person from within.
Unlike secular knowledge, which informs the mind but leaves the soul unchanged, Torah elevates the entire being. It is this divine light- the “Or HaTorah”- that refines a person’s traits and transforms their inner world.
Even when feeling distant or idle, when a person chooses to pick up a verse, a Mishnah, a law or thought of Torah, he immediately connects to this supreme spiritual energy. That moment becomes the most elevated thing a human being can do. It’s no wonder our sages said that if we ranked all beings in a pyramid- from minerals and plants to animals and humans- the person who devotes his time to Torah stands proudly at the very top.
As long as that individual truly strives to live according to the guidance of the Torah, his life is lit up with spiritual brilliance, and the world itself is sustained in part through him.
This also explains the powerful teaching of our sages: “If only they had abandoned Me, but still kept My Torah- the light within it would have brought them back to good.” The holiness of Torah is such that even if someone engages with it without full intent, the light within it eventually awakens the soul, nudges it, and guides it back toward truth.
In every moment of Torah study, a person is refining themselves, bringing blessing to the world, and strengthening the Jewish people. The soul is uplifted, the mind is enlightened, and character is transformed.
No wonder King David cried out from the depths of his longing: “My soul thirsts for You, my flesh longs for You…” and then celebrated the Torah with these timeless words:
“The Torah of Hashem is perfect, restoring the soul;
The testimony of Hashem is trustworthy, making the simple wise.
The precepts of Hashem are right, rejoicing the heart;
The commandment of Hashem is pure, enlightening the eyes.
The fear of Hashem is pure, enduring forever;
The judgments of Hashem are true, righteous altogether.
They are more desirable than gold, even much fine gold,
Sweeter than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.”
