A new study published in the Journal of the Association for Psychological Science offers a simple and effective solution for those struggling with stress, anxiety, worry, and sadness: doing kind deeds for others.
“It’s well known that stress and sadness weigh heavily on the heart and prevent people from experiencing happiness,” explained one of the researchers. “The goal of this study was to prove that there is a path to happiness- and surprisingly, it doesn’t require spending a fortune. Daily acts of kindness not only bring joy to the recipient but also reduce your own stress and strengthen your character.”
The study was led by researcher Emily Ansell from the Yale School of Medicine and involved around 80 participants aged 18 to 45, all of whom reported symptoms of depression or daily stress.

Participants were asked to perform daily acts of kindness- ranging from donating money, helping the elderly or disabled, smiling at strangers, having heartfelt conversations with lonely individuals, to buying groceries for those in need.
At the end of each day, participants completed a self-assessment, sharing their experiences and emotional reflections.
The results were striking: all 80 participants reported an immediate improvement in overall well-being. They described a surge in motivation “to do,” “to take action,” “to go out into the world,” and “to stop wasting time on negative thoughts.” Moreover, those who engaged in more acts of kindness throughout the day reported fewer negative emotions and were better able to focus on their positive feelings. On the flip side, on days when participants skipped their good deeds, they experienced a noticeable drop in positive emotions and struggled more with daily stressors.
Being kind doesn’t just change someone else’s day- it can change your own life.
