Why You Were Born: Discovering Your Unique Purpose in the Universe

How can we truly be sure that we have a purpose in this world, and that our existence isn’t just a cosmic accident?

When someone creates something, it is always designed with a clear goal in mind. Consider a lamp for instance. which was was made to light up a room. It is built from specific materials and shaped to spread light efficiently. The purpose comes before the object is made, and defines how it’s made.

The more complex the purpose, the more intricate the creation:

• A violin is much more complex than a lamp, because it’s intended to produce nuanced, beautiful sound.

• A museum is more complex, because it preserves knowledge and culture for generations.

Living beings are the most complex creations in the world. Even the smallest flower is a living creation with an intricate life-sustaining system:

• It grows and develops.

• It attracts insects to pollinate and reproduce.

• It transforms water and sunlight into nutrients for itself and its surroundings.

Such incredible complexity wouldn’t exist if there were no purpose behind it. Plants and animals have clear roles:

• Plants balance ecosystems, provide food and medicine.

• Bees maintain the cycle of life through pollination.

• Animals offer food, assist in agriculture, and even serve divine purposes (like the wild beasts sent in the plague of Arov in Egypt).

Humans alone possess qualities that no other creature has:

• Intellect and reasoning – the power to think, explore, invent, and analyze.

• Emotions and conscience – compassion, morality, love, and responsibility.

• Spiritual awareness – the capacity to connect with G-d.

The single greatest distinction between humans and animals is the divine soul. Your soul is the clearest sign that you have a mission in this world. If you were created with the capacity for spiritual connection, it indicates that your life’s purpose is deeply tied to your relationship with your Creator.

The great Jewish thinker Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto (Ramchal) writes in Derech Hashem (The Way of G-d): “The essence of all spiritual work is that a person should constantly turn toward their Creator and understand that they were created to cleave to Him.”

In practice, this means:

• Building a real relationship with G-d.

• Bringing holiness into your daily life.

• Learning to see spiritual reality even in the mundane.

Human beings are the most complex creation, and naturally, they have the most incredible role: to reveal G-d’s presence in the world, connect to Him, and live a life full of depth and meaning.

How Can You Be Sure You Have a Purpose?

• If even a lamp was created with a purpose, how much more so were you, a being infinitely more intricate!

• Your soul is proof that your purpose is higher than anything else in creation.

• You are part of the center of the universe—the entire world was created to give you the chance to fulfill your unique role.

Your mission is to connect with G-d, uncover your inner spiritual power, and make the world a better place.
