#VALUE!

Prayer is not just a practice for the Jew, it is a way of life. Just as marriage is not merely a partnership but a shared life, so too is our relationship with God. We live with Him and He is beside us at every moment, ready to help us in anything, big or small, and listens to everything we say to Him. This is the Jewish path — living in constant connection with the Divine.

What an awe-inspiring privilege it is to speak with the King of kings, the exalted Master of all creation, who rules over angels, seraphim, and the entire universe! And yet, despite His infinite greatness, He listens to every prayer — each word spoken by any Jew, no matter where they are.

The Greatest Pleasure

Rav Elazar Menachem Shach once said: "There is no greater pleasure in my life than standing in prayer before the Holy One, blessed be He. That is my greatest joy."

The Privilege of Being Close to God

Rav Shlomo Wolbe writes in Alei Shur (Vol. 1, p. 27): "Only a human being has the ability to pray — to speak directly to God and pour out their heart." No animal, no other creature, has this power or the merit to draw close to the Creator in this way.

It’s an astounding closeness: to speak to the Creator of the universe in the second person. Normally, when addressing someone we respect such as a teacher or elder, we speak in the third person: “the rabbi,” “His Honor,” “Sir.” But to the King of all kings, we say simply, “You.”

We also call Him by name. Could any of us imagine addressing the greatest Torah sage of the generation by his first name? How much more so should we approach the Name of God with trembling, reverence, and awe when we speak it aloud!

Don't Let Habit Dull the Wonder

The routine of daily prayer can dull our emotional sensitivity. We grow up saying these words, and we can become numb to their depth, beauty, and power. To reignite our sense of awe, we must pause for a few moments each day before prayer and remind ourselves: What a privilege it is to stand before God, to speak to Him directly, and to call Him by name.
